Thunderbolts Statue

This statue was a Bicentennial project for Uralla and district. The statue is of the colourful bushranger, Thunderbolt seated on horseback.

Captain Thunderbolt, born Frederick Ward in 1835, was the son of a convict. Of all the bushrangers who engaged in their illegal careers in Australia during the first 100 years of white settlement, Thunderbolt, hero or horse thief, was at large for probably the longest period. He was eventually shot and killed on the 25th May, 1870.

By placing $1.00 in a slot at the base of the statue a dramatised version of the life and escapades of this colourful bushranger can be heard.
