Washpool National Park
A rainforest wilderness for the imagination, of forest piled on forest
seething with sounds and yet silent. Giant buttressed tree trunks, like
Gothic columns, standing seemingly motionless and softly dappled. The world
of water whirling pools and dancing creeks fall in sparkling curves on their
journeys toward the ocean. The wonder of Washpool.
is spread out over an area of 65, 779 ha.
In Washpool National Park, access to Coachwood picnic area, Bellbird and
Coombadjha rest areas is provided by Coombadjha road which leaves the Gwydir
Highway 75 kilometres east form Glen Innes. Picnic facilities and a lookout
are also provided at the Granites picnic area. Walking tracks commence from
Coachwood picnic area and Coombadjha rest area. Access for wilderness walking
is via Moogem Road which branches off Coombadjha Road just before the facility
areas. Pitt toilets, camping and BBQ sites are available at Washpool National Park.
On the opposite side of the Gwydir Highway is Gibraltar National Park.
