Moree Plains Gallery
Moree Plains Gallery provides a rich cultural and educational experience for the people of Moree and the north-west of New South Wales.
Our mission is inspired by the far-reaching plains of our region – the Gallery aims to expand the artistic horizons of people right across our diverse community.
Through displays from our permanent collection, visiting exhibitions and varied public programs, the Gallery stimulates the community and broadens knowledge and cultural appreciation. We strongly support the work of contemporary Australian artists, especially Aboriginal artists.
The large downstairs space is used for major exhibitions and is dedicated to the Kamilaroi People and houses three permanent displays of Aboriginal material. The Robert Bleakley Collection is made up mostly of
wooden artefacts, including some Kamilaroi items and bark paintings from Arhnem Land; a large number of local stone objects have also been donated by Mr Ron Hardman. Two pairs of King Plates form the TGA Cory Collection, and are particularly significant because, although many individual plates survive, pairs, which were given to a 'king' and 'queen', are much rarer.
The Gallery also has a carved Myall Tree, created by Kamilaroi artist Lawrence Leslie under the patronage of the Moree Cultural Art Foundation. The Kamilaroi people traditionally incised living trees with symbolic and ceremonial design. This carved tree pays tribute to that heritage.
Another feature of the Gallery is a large marble statue, Paura 'dell Intimita (Fear of Intimacy), by Australian sculptor Peter Schipperheyn.
The Gallery’s annual program includes local and touring exhibitions with a range of other cultural events, such as piano recitals, choral performances, classes and
workshops.
The Moree Plains Gallery is housed is one of the important historic buildings in Moree and is located in the town centre. Designed by PE Ranclaud and built in 1910 as a bank for the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney this National Trust listed building is a fine example of the Free Classical style of architecture.
Entry to the Gallery is by donation.
