Hunter Region Botanic Gardens
At the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens in Heatherbrae, you can enjoy over 30 hectares of tranquil landscaped gardens, displaying the beauty and diversity of Australian native flora. In a natural bush setting, the gardens feature over 3,000 living specimens with eight kilometres of easy tracks and trails. Theme gardens include exotics, orchid and bromeliad houses, and an amazing succulent and cacti garden.
The result of community initiative and run by volunteers, the gardens also protects 140 hectares of land in the Tomago sandbeds catchment area, including two wetland habitats.
Plants are cultivated for sale. There is a visitor centre with a cafe and gift shop. There are also a library, herbarium, wildflower walks/trails and an abundance of wildlife.
The gardens are open from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. seven days (excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday). Toilets, water and car parking are all available. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch, but unfortunately barbecues are forbidden due to fire restrictions in the gardens.
Guided tours run every Sunday at 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. or by booking two weeks in advance. Group and coach bookings can be arranged by phoning the gardens direct.
Heatherbrae is just 20 minutes north of Newcastle on the Pacific Highway.
