Ballina Pioneer Memorial Park

Located immediately over Missingham Bridge from Ballina. The Ballina
cemetary was originally established here due to to the high ground.

The first recorded burial in old East Ballina cemetery is that of Pearson
Simpson on 26th May, 1853. In 1915 graves were transferred to the new
Ballina cemetery.

It was not until 1963 that this Pioneer Park was established under a special
act of Parliament. The old headstones are being used to create a historic walk.
Owing to the large number of shipping disasters, many sea captains and crew
were buried within this cemetery - a grim reminder of Australia's historic
past.
