Lismore Rainforest and Nature Reserves

The first settlers were timber cutters and by 1900 most of the 'Big Scrub' was destroyed. Today, only remnants survive, which reflect the character of the original rainforest.

Rotary Park, in the centre of the city, comprises six hectares of 'dry' rainforest, dominated by Hoop Pines and giant figs. Rotary Park's structure is simpler than the luxuriant sub-tropical rainforest that was the 'Big Scrub'. It is made up of species that have adapted over the years to a developed landscape and dryer climate. A boardwalk has been built through the park and a brochure detailing the tree species is available from the Lismore Visitor and Heritage Centre.

The Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve consists of four hectares of reserve dedicated to preserving the local koala population. A 15-minute drive from Lismore on Wyrallah Road, Tucki was created in 1958 by a committee of local citizens caring for koalas. There is a walking track, as well as picnic and barbecue facilities. There is also a brochure available.

Victoria Park Nature Reserve, situated 16 kilometres south-east of Lismore, includes eight hectares of forest. With assisted regeneration, the forest will eventually cover almost 16 hectares. It is home to wallabies, red-legged pademelons and possums, among other species. Picnic and barbecue facilities are provided and the walking track features boardwalk access for people with a disability.

Victoria Park features the remnants of a gigantic fig tree, which was seen by Captain Cook as he sailed up the east coast of Australia. The tree was struck by lightening in the early 1980s, but today people can walk around its base and marvel at its size. A total of 152 tree species are recorded in the park, including White Booyong, Bumpy Ash and Strangler Figs.

Wilson Park, three kilometres from the city centre off Wyrallah Road, is a 19-hectare reserve, with many trees identified by nameplates. It is a popular location for spotlighting as it is home to a variety of birds, possums and native wildlife.
