Nightcap National Park

Explore World Heritage Rainforest - Nightcap National Park (8,080 hectares).

At the southern rim of the 20 million year old Mt Warning volcano, Nightcap National Park is one of the best developed subtropical rainforests in the state and home to several endangered birds. It contains walking tracks which can be approached by car by driving to the Mt Nardi television tower at Nimbin (12 Kilometres sealed road suitable for all vehicles but very steep); or from The Channon by taking the Terania Creek Road (14 kilometres unsealed).

From Mt Nardi you can take Pholi's Walk (2 kilometres - steep) to the Pholi's Gap Lookout and link to the Matheson loop Walk (a 3.5 kilometres return track) turning off 1.5 kilometres along Googarna Track. Googarna Track itself is 7 kilometres with remnants of the Kunghar Flying Fox log transporter at the western end. From Mt Matheson an 8 kilometres walk links with the Nightcap Track, signposted and graded through the rainforest mountain escarpments. This track was originally for packhorses, the first overland link between the Richmond and Tweed Valleys.
The box giants of Mt Nardi are up to 1500 years old.

Spectacular Protestor Falls in the Nightcap National Park is accessible by approaching the Nightcap along Terania Creek Road (14 kilometres unsealed, narrow and rough for large vehicles) from The Channon. Two cause-ways are crossed so care should be taken in wet weather. From the Channon it is a 9.5 kilometres drive to the picnic area. The waterfall is only 500 metres from the picnic area.

Camping for one night only is permitted but in heavy rain campers should leave to avoid being flooded in. Swimming and Fires are not permitted in the park – portable fuel stoves only.

Following signs from the picnic area marks the spot where in 1978 hundreds of protestors camped for weeks to impede the logging of this pristine rainforest. Their efforts were rewarded when rainforest logging was declared illegal in NSW and the Nightcap National Park was gazetted.

The Terania Creek Basin offers a wondrous diversity of flora and fauna, including over 130 species of birds. It is renowned for its beautiful palm forest.
