Richmond Range National Park
Richmond Range is a remnant of the once giant Focal Peak volcano thought to have been active some 24 million years ago. Richmond Range National Park encompasses the rainforests of Cambridge Plateau, which are included on the World Heritage list as part of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia. This chain of reserves protects most of the remaining areas of rainforest in south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales.
The park is renowned for its gum species, extensive old-growth forest and the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Cambridge Plateau. These internationally significant rainforests have an outstanding diversity of native plants and animals including many rare and threatened species. One local spotted gum, related to the more common form spotted gum of the New South Wales east coast, is found only in a small area on the range.
Picnicking, camping, bushwalking, bird watching, photography and nature study are rewarding ways to explore the natural splendour of the Richmond Range.
