Victoria Park Nature Reserve
A triangular reserve of 17.5 ha, The Victoria Park Nature Reserve contains 8 ha of rainforest which can be described as undisturbed. It is one of ten surviving remnants of the big Scrub, once the largest lowland sub-tropical rainforest in Australia.
It is situated 10kms south of Alstonville and can be approached from the Wardell road. The national parks and wildlife service and the Richmond Valley naturalists club, with community support have embarked upon an enterprising project of reforestation aimed at doubling the existing area of rainforest. Excellent examples of white booyong, yellow wood, bumpy ash, black bean, morton bay and strangler figs can be seen.
Victoria park is great for the enthusiastic bushwalkers or just for a family day outing. Marked walking tracks, barbecue and toilet facilities are also available.
For bird enthusiasts, birds seen include Emerald Dove, Topknot Pigeon, Eastern Yellow and Pale-yellow Robins, Pheasant Coucal, Large-billed and White-browned Scrubwrens, Noisy Pitta, Figbird, Green Catbird, Brown Cuckoo Dove and a Scarlet Honeyeater.
