Northern Rivers Performing Arts NORPA - Is one of the leading regional performing art companies in Australia. It has earned this reputation by being at the forefront of the regional theatre movement throughout its 15 year history and has contributed significantly to the national industry.
NORPA has regular performances and plays throughout the year at a couple of different venues in Lismore.
Since its establishment in 1993, NORPA has presented over 200 productions, 26 of which were NORPA produced, including 14 original works and five productions that have toured nationally. With Artistic Director Julian Lewis, NORPA aims to develop new theatre inspired by this region. In reflecting local culture, myth and character NORPA aims to contribute significantly to the artistic identity of Australia.
In 2001 NORPA was awarded the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Group Award in recognition of the contribution the company has made to the performing arts. This is the most prestigious award for the performing arts in Australia and NORPA is the first organisation based in regional Australia to receive this award. In 2002 and 2003 NORPA was awarded the NSW State Award at the annual APRA Australian Music Centre Classical Music Awards.
