Mt Browne Goldfields
Rumours of gold in the Corner Country had been circulating for some time when, in 1858, the Legislative Council of South Australia funded a venture into the region to look for evidence of the precious metal at that time nothing was found.
Twenty years later, payable gold was discovered near Depot Glen. Within a year 14 ounces had been found southwest, at Mt Browne. The conditions for the diggers were very difficult, there was a terrible shortage of food and water, which worsened as the population grew. Prices for basic commodities such as flour, were exorbitant. Diseases, such as cholera and typhoid, were rife on the fields.
Many campsites were established along Evelyn Creek, and soon after one of the campsites was proclaimed as Milparinka and was the first township in the region. Later three other townships, Mt Browne, Albert and Tibooburra were also proclaimed as towns.
The pioneer diggings of Mt Browne and the local cemetery, offer the visitor an insight into the history of the Corner Country. Located just a short drive to the south west of Milparinka, visitors are welcome . However, a courtesy call to the owners, on 08 8091 3862, is appreciated.
