Historic Buildings - Churches & Schools in Wentworth

Anglican Church on Darling Street; Wentworth’s Oldest Church.
The Anglican clergy were the first to visit the Wentworth district. At that time Anglicans attended regular services in the now demolished Wentworth Hotel (dining room).

The Parish of Wentworth was formed in 1871 and Reverend William Cocks organised the building of the Church (believed to be based on an English structure). The materials were brought to the site by barge, although locally made bricks were also used in the construction.

Saint John’s is the first church erected on the banks of the Darling River and is one of the most notable features in Wentworth. Heritage listed by the National Trust.

St Francis Xavier Church on Short Street, Wentworth’s second Church.
The first Roman Catholic Church built along the Darling River and the second church in Wentworth.

The foundation stone for Saint Francis Xavier Church was laid on June 18, 1871, in a ceremony held in pouring rain. Although still unfinished, the first mass was held in the early part of November 1872 by Rev. Matthew Ryan.

Rendelsham (The Nunnery) on Short Street. Original home of Wentworth’s first Mayor, William Gunn.
The first house to be called Rendelsham, was built by William Gunn (first Mayor of Wentworth). He lived there until he built the second residence in the centre of the town - Rendelsham House, and then this house became Catholic Church property, used by the local Priest as the Presbytery.

In 1892, it became the Convent, home of the Sisters of Mercy who established and taught at the adjacent St Ignatius School.

St. Ignatius Early Convent School on Cadell Street.
Saint Ignatius was built in 1911.

Catholic schooling began at Wentworth on February 8, 1892, when Sisters of Mercey answered the Bishop’s call to come to the town at the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers.

Saint Ignatius was built in 1911, a wooden structure located in the convent grounds and the first Catholic High School in the area. The building was used in the 1940’s as the infant section of St Francis Xavier School (opened in 1925), and was eventually closed to the public at the end of 1950.

Our little school-house was restored by the National Trust and in February 2002 the school building was listed as a local historic building on the State Heritage Register.
