The essence of the West Darling Region is that it is a place of extremes. It is either desert or deluge. In tourism terms, it’s the gateway to the outback and the centre of outback art. Watercourses that run dry for a decade can suddenly turn into a flood, and land that is as hard and dry as concrete overnight can become carpeted with wildflowers and fresh grass. Eric McCormick settled into the area in 1980, coming in pursuit of more vivid and striking effects of light, and to record a heightened awareness of the natural phenomena and the mining and pastoral industries which are specific to the area.
