Milparinka Barracks Heritage Precinct
'The buildings themselves took us by surprise when we saw them with our own eyes. It was really something to come across these beautifully restored 19th century edifices in the middle of the semi-desert, with hardly a blade of grass in sight. The sandstone literally glowed in the morning and afternoon light.'
Milparinka Visiting Volunteer 2006
Historic Milparinka, in the heart of the Corner Country of outback New South Wales, has a wonderful collection of heritage buildings on its Heritage Precinct: a superb old courthouse now adapted for use as a Local History and Family History Centre, the Police Barracks now restored and used as a Visitor Information Centre, and the former gaol an art gallery, but soon to be developed into a mining interpretive centre.
The locals have plotted a route around the old township, marked specific locations of importance and printed a brochure with map and site information on the Milparinka of another era.
The guide is available from the Milparinka Barracks Visitor Information Centre and the Albert Hotel.
The heritage precinct is managed by Visiting Volunteers, people who come to Milparinka for the experience of living and working, for free, amongst the local community. Join them, and us, at Milparinka.
