Great North Walk INN-to-INN walking Holiday - 6 or 8 days

The Great North Walk is a 250 kilometres track linking Sydney to Newcastle in the north. We are offering the first part of the track, from Sydney to Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River. The walking track passes through some of the region's most outstanding natural scenery, commencing with a ride on one of Sydney's quaint harbour ferries. Stroll through historic Hunters Hill admiring fine architecture dating back to the 1850s. Follow the Lane Cove River northwards through parkland that changes to steep sided gorges with forests that are home to a cacophony of bird song. The choruses of currawong, kookaburra and magpie calls provide a melodic background to the sounds of running water in the many creeks and rivers you'll pass. This sandstone country is where walkers will find smooth barked apple trees (Angophoras), notable for their fantastically twisted limbs and pink hues that are a photographer's delight. Continuing through Galston Gorge you'll hike to Berowra Waters, a sleepy village in an idyllic location. Nestled deep in the gorges of Berowra Creek and accessed by a small ferry, Berowra Waters provide a handful of lucky residents with a magnificent hideaway. Most of the houses are only accessible by boat so if the locals go out partying they keep a keen eye open for the water police! Further north the rivers become progressively wider until meeting the mighty Hawkesbury River itself. Mangroves lining the banks of the river provide soil stabilisation, a valuable natural water purification system and a rich breeding ground for aquatic animals. Make sure you try the local oysters for a real taste treat! This trip finishes at the picturesque village of Brooklyn.

Hawkesbury Trail INN-to-INN walking holiday - 6 days

Auswalk's Hawkesbury Trail is a journey of discovery through three diverse National Parks, staying in B&B'S along the way. Walk through lush forests, pass by sleepy river communities that are accessible only by boat and stroll around bustling marinas housing lavish motor cruisers and sailing yachts. Some sections of this trip incorporate different types of river travel - a great way to meet the locals! Eventually the river reaches the sea and the dense forests and peaceful river inlets give way to the breathtakingly beautiful beaches and dramatic cliff tops of the coast. Self guided: Use our easy-to-follow walking notes and marked maps to find your way.
