Laddie Timbery Aboriginal Art and Crafts

Laddie Timbery and the Timbery family have been sharing their rich Aboriginal culture with visitors for many years.

Members of the Timbery family regularly produce the art work and artefacts sold in the shop. Paintings, both traditional and contemporary are on offer, as is Laddie’s artwork. Laddie’s specialty is burning-in – a technique for burning designs into wood. Other family members are highly regarded for their shell art. There are many other artefacts sold, including boomerangs, didgeridoos and bullroarers; many are beautifully decorated and all are authentically sourced from Aboriginal artists in regional New South Wales and around Australia.

Laddie is in the shop most days, and is always happy to demonstrate boomerang throwing or talk with you about the history of the artwork, the uses for the artefacts and of course, Aboriginal culture, history and Dreamtime legend. On any day there is someone at the shop to "yarn" with on these topics. There are also several DVDs available about the family, their history and artwork, as well as publications such as "Timbery Tales".

About Laddie:
Laddie Timbery, Dharawal and Uin Elder, is an Aboriginal man from the Bidjigal clan in the Eora Nation, the area now known as Sydney City and its southern area.

The Timbery family is thought to be descended from Pemulwuy (c.1750–1802). When the Uranie expedition under Louis de Freycinet visited Sydney between 18 November and 25 December 1819, artist Jacques Arago made lively, recognizable sketches of Aboriginal people, including Timbere, a member of the Five Islands Tribe, who was Laddie's direct ancestor. A copy of this portrait can be found in Laddie's shop, and you will see that the resemblance between Laddie and Timbere is striking.

Laddie Timbery’s Aboriginal Arts and Crafts is located next to the museum shop in the Lady Denman Museum complex in Huskisson.
