Opera Australia - Tour the Opera Centre
In 1984 a printing and stationer's warehouse in Surry Hills was bought and converted to house the 250 permanent employees and many more casual and part time staff who work as a team to produce some of the world's most exciting and innovative opera.
The Opera Centre houses many different departments and artisans whose work is on display for you to view first hand including: Costume manufacture and storage; a millinery department; a jeweller and cobbler; several wig makers; props manufacture; set design, building and painting; rehearsal spaces (often with working rehearsals under way); corridors filled with arias and scales drifting from the many coaching rooms; and offices for the administrative staff.
Tours : Held each week day at 10.00am and 2.00pm. Bookings essential.
Tour includes: Morning or afternoon tea
Maximum number is 50 and a minimum of 2 weeks notice is required.
Luncheon tours are also available, these start at 11.00am and finish in the Green Room for a home-made lunch including wine, orange juice, tea and coffee.
A minimum of 20 people is required.
