Centennial Parklands

A grand park in the European tradition, Centennial Park covers more than 360 hectares and draws more than five million visitors annually. Its grounds include formal gardens, ponds, grand avenues, statues, heritage buildings and sporting fields.

The park's great circular road, Grand Drive, was Sydney's first public suburban drive. Today the Grand Drive has tracks for walkers, joggers, cyclists, rollerbladers and horse riders.

The park is one of the few in the world to offer inner-city horse riding - available through Centennial Park Equestrian Centre. Centennial Park's Grand Drive incorporates a three point eight kilometre cycling lane with low gradient; ideal also for rollerblading. Bikes and rollerblades are also available to hire.

Shady picnic and barbecue areas cater for larger groups while the reed fringed ponds are an ideal setting for observing water birds of just sitting and relaxing.

Popular sites for spotting both land and water birds include Duck Pond, Willow Pond and Lachlan Swamp. Lachlan Swamp provides habitat to blue-tongue lizards, brushtail possums and a variety of invertebrates. Freshwater turtles can often be spotted basking on the islands in Duck Pond.

Large numbers of grey-headed flying foxes - also known as fruit bats - fly into the parklands each night from a camp in Sydney’s northern suburbs to feed on nectar, blossoms and the fruit of the fig, paperbark and gum trees. At twilight, stand at the Robertson Road Gates to observe these amazing animals as they congregate for their nightly ritual.

In summer, Centennial Park hosts Moonlight Cinema, and is also a popular venue for rock concerts which in the past have included Jamiroquai.

Centennial Park is also a living monument to the birth of the nation. On 1 January 1901, 250,000 people gathered in Federation Valley to celebrate the union of six independent colonies into the Federation of Australia. The Federation Pavilion now stands on this site.

Centennial Parklands also extends to a range of recreational facilities located close to the park. There are tennis courts for hire, golf and a Fitness Station which offers a variety of apparatus to work on all your body within the beautiful surrounds of Queens Park.

There are numerous places in the park offering rollerblade hire and bicycle hire, including Centennial Parklands Cycle Hire, Centennial Park Cycles, and Total Skate. Horse riding establishments include Centennial Parklands Equestrian Centre, Budapest Riding School, Centennial Stables, Eastside Riding Academy, Moore Park Training Stables and Papillon Riding Stables.
