Manly Beach

Manly is the general name for the entire 1.5km stretch of sand, divided (north to south) into Queenscliff, North Steyne, South Steyne and Manly.

Manly is also the first in a string of beaches which are more spacious, lazier and leafier than the fashionable eastern suburbs' beaches. Mona Vale, Avalon, Newport and more are worth a day trip for beach lovers, while the half-hour ferry trip to Manly is an attraction in itself.

While the ferry arrives into the Harbour Beach, the surf beach a short walk through the Corso (pedestrian mall) to the ocean. Cafes, restaurants and accommodation from backpacker basic to four-star hotel dot the waterfronts and the streets behind. At Manly wharf you'll also find some good restaurants and shopping.

Manly's history is long, and in 1903, Manly Beach was one of the first in Sydney to permit daylight swimming!

There are rips along the entire length of the Manly Beach, so always swim between the flags. The most notorious rip runs along the rocks at the southern end beside the surf club. Provided you swim between the flags, the Manly end is probably the safest, and a good spot for children.

You will also find patrolled areas at the more open North Steyne and at Queenscliff, famous for its short breaks. At the Queenscliff end try the pool on the northern rocks, which is 40m long and good for laps.

Manly Cove has calm waters for swimming, or there is Shelley Beach, an ocean beach that is very sheltered. It is interesting to not the Shelley Beach is the only Westerly facing beach on the East Coast of Australia. To reach it, turn right at the ocean end of The Corso and follow the short coast walk more commonly known as the Cabbage Tree Bay Eco-Sculpture Walk.
