Cataract Dam
Cataract is the oldest and possibly the most picturesque dam in Sydney's water supply system. Completed in 1907, it was the first of four dams constructed in the Upper Nepean Catchment area to ensure Sydney's water supply.
The 56 metre high dam holds water from a 130 square kilometre catchment, forming an 850 hectare lake with a capacity of 94,300 mega litres. Water from Cataract is delivered to Sydney via the Upper Canal and Prospect Reservoir.
Located between Campbelltown and Wollongong, Cataract Dam is within easy reach for a day excursion and is equipped with picnic shelters, barbecues, toilets, playground and a viewing area. The walking track is a two and a half kilometre round trip, and is an easy to medium one and a half hour walk.
