Cockatoo Island
Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour. It is one of Sydney’s great places to visit – big, surprising and entertaining. Cockatoo Island is a former imperial prison, industrial school, reformatory and gaol. It is also the site of one of Australia’s biggest shipyards during the twentieth century.
Cockatoo Island is one of the best places in Sydney to appreciate the harbour - magnificent views of the harbour bridge, the city skyline and the wonderful juxtaposition of headlands, suburbs and water.
Where else can you pitch a tent and camp so close to the city. Or take a self-guided tour of a former convict prison and shipbuilding site. There are guided tours for anyone who wants an in-depth introduction to the island’s history and an audio tour for a dramatic account of convict days and the shipbuilding era. In one of the island’s two tunnels the mood is set by a soundscape. A walkway atop the eastern cliff face affords stunning views.
Today Cockatoo Island retains many remnants of its past. The island is on the National Heritage List and its prison buildings have been nominated for World Heritage listing, along with other convict sites around Australia. Large workshops, slipways, wharves, residences and other buildings retain the texture of the island’s industrial past. There are many spots around the island to sit and contemplate the harbour scenery and enjoy the gritty, industrial character of the island’s buildings and open spaces.
Cockatoo Island is located 10 minutes ferry ride west of Harbour Bridge.
