Shopping in The Rocks
You’ll find a blend of Sydney’s best at The Rocks: traditional handicrafts with cutting edge design, a classic French patisserie, the oldest pub in the country, panoramic harbour views and narrow sandstone-paved alleys. And a wonderful way to experience this ever-evolving district is to set aside a day (or two) and go shopping!
You'll find most stores on George, Playfair and Argyle Streets, although there are plenty out-of-the-way gems. For an iconic Australian purchase try Done
Art and Design, Opal Fields for Australian jewellery, or the sheepskin shops for all manner of things made from Australian wool.
The Rocks is also home to highly individual shops which defy categorisation: the Puppet shop – with marionettes and masks from all around the world,
Sticky – sweets for all tastes, or the Card Framing Company, for example. The Rocks Centre offers retail therapy as does Playfair Terrace.
There over 15 galleries in The Rocks selling their wares including art from Ken Done, photographer Ken Duncan, Weiss Art, as well as the MCA Store at the
Museum of Contemporary Art on George Street.
Every weekend from 10am to 5pm the all-weather The Rocks markets open up. The emphasis is on quality hand made Australian crafts, and you'll find
everything from jewellery to jigsaws. Be pleasurably distracted from your shopping by excellent coffee, snack stalls, or a wandering street performer.
And once the pastel hues of sunset on Sydney harbour have been replaced by the reflection of night-lights, you’ll know its time for dinner. But you won’t
have to go far – The Rocks are home to some of Sydney’s finest restaurants.
