Dharug National Park
Steeped in history and abounding in natural wonders, Dharug National Park's multi-coloured sandstone landscape protects vital clear-water tributaries. The historic Old Great North Road that once connected Sydney and Newcastle is still intact and a spectacular example of early 19th century road-building as well as a lesson in planning gone wrong. Abandoned even before it was finished, it took the toil and sweat of convicts to quarry, dress and shift the huge sandstone blocks that form the road's striking retaining walls and bridges. Walk the first 1.6-km section of the old road, or stroll along the 1.6km Grass Tree Circuit, a good walk for families. You can also experience the park's natural beauty on one of its many great walking tracks.
Discovery walks, talks and tours are available throughout the year. The park is also a popular destination for mountain biking (bikes must be walked up Devines Hill). Phone the Gosford office for more details on the most popular cycling routes. Car-based and small-caravan camping is available at Mill Creek and backpack camping is permitted at Ten Mile Hollow. Park use and camping fees apply and bookings are required.
