Maroubra Beach
Maroubra Beach is a National Surfing Reserve, the first beach in New South Wales to be granted this honour (2006), the second in Australia (after Bells Beach Victoria in 1973).
If you want to experience surfing here, you can bring your own board or join a local surf school for a lesson (Sydney Safer Surf School and Safaris (02) 9365 4370). The headlands to the south of Maroubra Beach are popular for dive schools (Pro Dive Coogee/Bondi (02) 9665 6333) while to the north is Mahon Pool - a large seawater swimming pool.
The Maroubra Beach Surfing Walk of Fame (the first of its kind in Australia 2006), is positioned along the Promenade. Modelled on the famous World Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California, the bronze plaques are dedicated to four surfing greats as the first inductees, and will grow with the addition of a new plaque every year.
Maroubra Beach has a number of cafes and is joined by a picturesque coastal walk to Coogee or is easily accessed by bus from Coogee Beach or the City.
Note: The National Surfing Reserve status signifies the cultural and historical importance of Maroubra Beach to Australian surfing and helps raise awareness about the importance of protecting our precious coastal environment.
