Penrith Lakes Scheme

This 1,950-hectare area (which is the size of Sydney Harbour from the Bridge to the Heads) is being developed to establish a series of lakes for Recreational Purposes. The first Lake has been completed and is now the Sydney International Regatta Centre. It is now operating and was the Sydney 2000 Olympics venue for Rowing and Canoeing.

The scheme will take about 30 years to complete (expected completion date approximatley 2010-2015) and is part of an agreement between Boral Limited, CSR Limited and Pioneer Concrete Services Ltd, the State Government and Penrith City Council.

Coarse gravel and sand is being mined out of the area for the manufacture of concrete and other products, the area is then to be reclaimed, regenerated and landscaped.

In total, 7 lakes will be built, 4 recreational & 3 for wildlife and passive recreation. Sports such as wind surfing, sailing, sailboarding, canoeing and swimming will be conducted.

Some housing development is planned along the eastern boundary of the scheme.

The organising theme used for the lakes design is based on the replication of natural processes of Lake Formation usually associated with a river system meandering through a flood plain. Using surface materials in the Scheme will reinforce the integrity of this theme, which reflect existing colours, textures and patterns of the landscape. About 220,000 trees will be planted and native flora and fauna will be encouraged.
