Emerald Star Cruises

The Emerald Star’s keel was laid on the Central Coast NSW ( Brooklyn ) in 1939 as a fishing trawler and it was during this wartime period that the original builders fell upon hard times
abandoning the project until Stan Hegarty purchased the partly completed hull and had his foreman, Charlie Shannon and Ship Wright, Bill Taylor commuting between Sydney and the Central Coast weekly by train to take the hull thru to a stage when it was suitable to be towed to Sydney. The Hegarty ferry, Sunrise Star towed the craft to Hegarty’s Drummoyne home where it was fitted out by AG Williams who were well known for their motor cruisers.

Launched 1942. it started Harbour ferry service operations from Lavender Bay to Circular Quay #2 Wharf and operated as a Hegarty Ferry, servicing Circular Quay to Inner Harbour wharfs and shorter routes around Sydney Harbour for decades beginning in the 1940s..

The vessel is carvel planked and just over 18 metres long overall. During the war it carried troops between ship and shore on Sydney Harbour. After the war EMERALD STAR worked for many years with Hegartys and was well known to people who caught their service from Lavender Bay to the Quay and return. Without doing anything of note during its long period as a ferry it has become a fixture on the Harbour for over 60 years as a trusted workhorse. When these short inner harbour ferry services closed down around 2003 EMERALD STAR changed hands and it now works as a charter vessel.

In 2009 listed with the Australian Register of Heritage Vessels it retains its original layout and appearance as a single deck ferry with a raised wheelhouse and gangways located next to the wheelhouse. Commercial additions of a stainless steel 6 burner BBQ 1000 watt sound system IPOD compatible and party lights are in keeping with repairs required during it's 67 year working life, the structure largely remains original. It is still extremely popular with the public and has been chartered for parties, Island transfers, corporate functions, weddings and funerals, including many cruises for former regular passengers who caught it to School, College, University or work.
