Ulupna Island
Ulupna Island, a flora and fauna reserve is 14.5km long and 6.5km wide. This
reserve is the home of many koalas and kangaroos which can be easily seen in
their natural setting.
In the early days of the white mans inhabitance of the country, it is believed
koalas were quite numerous. They were then known as native bears and for the
value of their skins, were shot and snared in large numbers - almost to the
point of extinction on the island.
In 1962 a councillor, Mr Jack Farrell, arranged for two transport loads of
koalas to be released in the park and 100 mixed sexes were settled along the
river. Koala Bears are most likely to be seen at Carters Beach.
