Jay Creek

Jay Creek is the Trailhead for Sections 2 and 3 of the Larapinta Trail.

From Spring Gap (Section 2) much of the walk to Jay Creek takes you along a high ridgeline that will reward you with great views and often a pleasant breeze. Keep an eye out for the euros (wallaby) which take shelter in the boulders and overhangs. As you walk between the ridge and Jay Creek, you pass through a large area of mulga woodland. Jay Creek flows from the north-west through a rugged gorge for about one kilometre, cutting through the Chewings Range. Located a the gorge’s southern end, is a deep permanent pool known as Fish Hole, where the rocky floor narrows to just a few metres across.

Camping is permitted for Larapinta Trail walkers only, and vehicle access to Jay Creek is by four-wheel drive only.

Section 2 of the Larapinta Trail is graded as medium - a narrow track which may be rough in places, with some climbing and descending, suitable for people who walk regularly.

Section 3 of the Larapinta Trail is graded as hard - a rough and narrow track with some steep and/or long climbs and descents, suitable for fit people with previous bushwalking experience.
