Serpentine Chalet Dam

Serpentine Chalet Dam is the Trailhead for Sections 8 and 9 of the Larapinta Trail.

As you approach Serpentine Chalet Dam from Counts Point (Section 8), you come to an ‘island’ of bushes and shady trees that has a much greater variety of vegetation compared to the nearby dolomite hills. This diversity is due to several factors, the creek bed and cliff provide protection from fires, and the cliff and tall trees shelter the more delicate plants, the soil is better and there is more water below the creek than on the nearby slopes. Due to the community’s varied structure, this provides shelter for a range of reptiles, insects and birds. As well, the variety of plants, means that most of the time at least one species is flowering, giving nectar eating animals a continuous food supply as well as shelter. Take the walk upstream from the water tanks for about 150 metres to the concrete dam, this dam was the first of two dams that were built around 1960 to provide a water supply for the old Serpentine Chalet.

Camping is permitted, and access to Serpentine Chalet is via four wheel drive only. There is no vehicle access to Serpentine Chalet Dam – only to the bush camp, chalet ruins and the gate.

Section 8 and 9 of the Larapinta Trail are graded as hard - a rough and narrow track with some steep and/or long climbs and descents, suitable for fit people with previous bushwalking experience.
