Standley Chasm
Midday is the best time to be standing in Standley Chasm, 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs. As the sun reaches its zenith, it shines down directly on the loose rock in this narrow cleft in the ranges and the sheer walls light up with fiery intensity. For the rest of the day the chasm is cool, shady and still impressive, surrounded by masses of vegetation including cycads, ferns and river gums. There is a pretty one kilometre trail from the car park and kiosk to the chasm.
