O'Keeffe Residence
Originally built as a recreation hut in 1943 by army officers stationed in Katherine during World War II, it soon became the officers’ mess. The building is an example of local construction utilising locally available material such as Cypress pine and iron sheeting. The O'Keeffe Residence is one of the very few structures from the World War II era that have survived.
The house has been associated with a number of famous local Territory people such as Charlie and Joyce Fuller, Mr and Mrs Dave Drysdale (ex-missionaries), Bill Forrester (PMG Linesman) and John and Olive O'Keeffe. Charlie Fuller was an ex-drover and later a senior farmhand with the CSIRO. He was also the first Municipal Officer for the Northern Territory administration in Katherine. John and Olive O'Keeffe were the last residents of the house. Olive O'Keefe arrived in the Territory in 1936 as a nurse and became quite well known throughout the Territory.
