Savannah Way

The Savannah Way is Australia’s greatest adventure drive, linking Cairns in north Queensland with Broome on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, traversing the Katherine region of the Northern Territory.

The drive is approximately 3,700 kilometres long and meanders through a huge swathe of Savannah woodland that covers tropical northern Australia. This is cattle country but the vast, isolated stations provide some tourist accommodation. The route is mainly sealed, although there are long stretches of gravel road and several challenging four-wheel drive detours.

The remote Northern Territory community of Borroloola beside the MacArthur River is the first stop along the route if you are driving from Queensland. This is an excellent base for barramundi fishing expeditions, exploring the Sir Edward Pellew group of islands and stocking up on supplies before exploring the Gulf region.

From Borroloola you can take the unsealed road north to Roper Bar on the tidal pandanus-fringed Roper River renowned for plentiful stocks of barramundi and saratoga, or drive west along the Carpentaria Highway to Cape Crawford for a helicopter ride over the awesome rock formations of the Lost City in the Abner Ranges.

Travellers will meet some true Territory characters at the unique Daly Waters pub just off the Stuart Highway, west of Cape Crawford before continuing on to the clear thermal pools of Mataranka.

One hour north of Mataranka is Katherine, a bustling regional town and gateway to the spectacular Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). Here you can swim, hire canoes, take boat tours or scenic flights over the Gorge.

Continue south west to the tiny heritage town of Timber Creek and on to Gregory National Park where magnificent ranges, gorges, sandstone formations, monsoon rainforests, boab trees and significant Aboriginal and European heritage sites can be explored by four-wheel drive.

Allow at least 14 days for the Northern Territory section or 30 days for the entire journey.
