Cape Crawford Tourism

Cape Crawford is situated on the remote corner of the Barkly Tablelands, at the Tablelands and Carpentaria Highway junction. Cape Crawford Tourism offers exhilarating and informative nature-based tours of the area, encompassing the unusual Lost City, a collection of towering sandstone columns, the Abner Escarpment, and the thermal spring waters at Poppy’s Pools.

Being involved with the Savannah Guides since 1996, owner Sandra Schleter offers travellers a rare experience to fly by helicopter into these remote and remarkable locations. The helipad is located opposite Heartbreak Hotel, where accommodation is also available. So why not stay for a few days, and enjoy one of these adventurous tours into this amazing area of the Territory, and hear about its mining, cultural history and ecology, see some of the rare birdlife and take in the spectacular surrounding landscapes. Cape Crawford Tourism is the sole operator into the Lost City.

Lost City Ground Tour

Accompanied by your guide, this 1.5 kilometre walk takes you around the base of a small section of the Lost City. You'll be shown a variety of plant species, learn the geology of the area, the cultural history and explore a cave that was formed from water tunnelling through the rocks. Many birds inhabit the area including the extremely rare Carpentaria Grass wren which is often seen during this walk. View the two Aboriginal art sites where you'll see pictures of goannas and other food sources. Please quote tour code L1 when booking.

Lost City Scenic

On this two hour tour, you'll fly by helicopter 11 kilometres from Cape Crawford and land on a plateau of the Abner Escarpment, in the middle of the ancient sandstone columns known as the Lost City. These natural skyscrapers were formed over 1.4 billion years ago, fashioned by years of erosion by what was once an inland sea. Your Savannah Guide will inform you about this area's mining history, its geology, botany, and about the local Aboriginal legends that surround this mystical place. This is truly nature at its very best – and a popular place for photographers. A medium level of fitness is required for the 500 metre walk. Please quote tour code L2 when booking.

Poppy's Pools

These therapeutic thermal pools are the perfect place to sit back, relax and escape the hoards of people. Pandanus line the creek and are a excellent backdrop to the majestic falls, making it a tranquil and peaceful place. Poppy's Pool is a photographer's paradise with many water birds spotted in this area. This tour is available as either a self-drive option, via helicopter and fixed wing. Prior bookings are essential for all tour options. Please quote tour code L3 when booking.
