Julalikari Arts

Julalikari Arts is located within the Mulga Community, and is located on the northern outskirts of Tennant Creek, a robust and colourful outback town 500 kilometres north of Alice Springs and 1,000 kilometres south of Darwin. Being the only art centre visible and accessible from the Stuart Highway, Julalikari Arts offers a unique opportunity to engage closely with Aboriginal women artists, to enter into deep discussion about their art, culture and contemporary life. On any week day, over twenty artists and art workers offer a welcoming hand and fascinating insights. Visitors are asked to observe the dress protocols and wear nothing revealing (for example - no brief shorts, men to wear a shirt)

From a grass-roots beginning in 1994, Julalikari Arts has developed into an important site that nurtures and markets diverse artistic styles and maintains cultural traditions. As Tennant Creek is a regional centre and home to many language groups, the art centre represents a melting pot of the regional art styles of the Warumungu, Warlmanpa, Warlpiri, Kaytetye, Alyawarr and Wambaya artists of the Barkly Region and beyond.

Peggy Jones, Susan Nelson, Flora Holt, Annie Grant and Lindy Brodie for example, all have unique styles, yet share an exuberance for colour and texture, which vibrates and glows with joy and satisfaction. Despite language differences, these artists show similarities which arise from shared country, history and family ties.

If there is a constant thread in these works, that binds or is constantly revisited, it is bush tucker. Historical, ceremonial and language themes are explored and celebrated, being always underpinned with this subject matter. No matter how contemporary or naive, sophisticated or raw the works may be, and no matter the socio-economic and community issues a large town produces, the Julalikari Artists demonstrate an indefatigable ability to retain strong roots, strong culture and strong beliefs.
