Saint Marys Catholic Church

Father Paul Tissot consecrated Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in 1872. It replaced an earlier wooden church built in 1858, which was then used for the first day school. The church was extended in 1885 and the majestic pipe organ was installed in 1912. The church was again extended in 1936 and altered to face Adelaide Street. The grotto to the side of Saint Mary’s was erected in 1951 as a tribute to Martin Jordan a US Army Lieutenant who was killed in Korea. His uncle Monsignor Martin Jordan was Saint Mary’s parish priest at the time.
