South Burnett Region Timber Industry Museum

The South Burnett Region Timber Museum in Wondai was officially opened on 24 November 2001 and is proving to be a popular destination with travellers. Conveniently situated on the main Bunya Highway, and with ample parking for cars, caravans and coaches, it is an impressive addition to Wondai which is becoming a popular 'tourist stop' on the burgeoning South Burnett Wine Trail.

The traditional timber structure is flanked by life-size sculptures of a bullocky and his bullocks, an old water-well and post and rail fence. Inside the Museum is a wonderful diorama featuring a typical bullockies' wagon camp, including a bullock dray belonging to local identity, the late Norm Stimpson. Set against authentic wooden slabs and shingles, are also displays of South Burnett timbers and photos of the early timber industry in the South Burnett.

In 2003 the Woodcrafters Workshop was added to the complex. Local woodcrafters regularly demonstrate their skills.

The attached Visitor Information Centre can provide material on other attractions in the shire as well as selling locally produced woodcraft. Entry is free, with the complex open from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. seven days a week except Good Friday, Christmas Day and Anzac Day morning.

Within a short walk, are a number of other interesting places to visit including the award winning Art Gallery, Heritage Museum, popular antique shops and eateries. Add to these, Wondai's attractive parks and gardens, and the town provides an ideal stopping place for the discerning traveller.
