Australian Workers Heritage Centre
Located in the iconic outback Queensland town of Barcaldine, the Australian Workers Heritage Centre is the custodian of the rich heritage, history and traditions of all working Australians.
Barcaldine was catapulted into the history books as the headquarters of one of the greatest upheavals in Australia's working history - the Great Shearers' Strike of 1891. The award winning Australian Workers Heritage Centre records these historic events as part of its tribute to the nation’s workers.
Opened in 1991 and described by many as the unsung wonder of the outback, this museum-style complex is situated in the grounds of the old Barcaldine State School. Many of the original structures have been reinvented into exhibition space. Other historic work places of yesteryear including a one teacher school, police watch-house and railway station have been relocated to the centre from throughout Queensland.
Within these unique spaces the stories of Australia’s working history come to life through objects, art and multi-media presentations.
From railway workers, blacksmiths, farmers and factory workers to mothers, nurses, teachers and nuns, the Heritage Centre aims to preserve their stories and record their achievements.
In 2002, the Centre opened Stage One of its eight million dollar Women in Australia’s Working History project. Be inspired by the lives and working experiences of a diverse range of Australian women featured in the new exhibition entitled ‘A Lot on Her Hands’.
The Heritage Centre has been designed with the weary traveller in mind. Beautifully landscaped gardens and shady trees surround a sparkling billabong creating a cool outback oasis – relaxed, tranquil and irresistibly beckoning.
Picnic shelters, barbecue facilities and a thoroughly modern children’s playground all add to the family friendly experience of the Heritage Centre. A gift shop showcases local artists, together with high quality souvenirs, books and country clothing collection.
