Lizard Race Track
The Paroo Lizard Race Track is in Eulo (67 kilometres west of Cunnamulla) and was the home of the Cunnamulla Eulo World Lizard Races. The track is guarded by a 20-foot frill neck lizard fashioned from wire. The red bull dust track is best described as ‘fast’. A judge’s platform is a fine example of bush architecture - half a dozen gidgee posts with a bower roof.
As with all great race meetings the Lizard Races had its own heroes and characters. ‘Wooden Head’ held the record for several years when he was challenged by the owners of ‘Destructo’ a cockroach from NSW. The race began with crowd roaring, dancing around and red dust flying. The cockroach and the lizard eyed each other and as ‘Destructo’ raced ahead and crossed the line the dancing Clerk of the Course accidentally squashed him. A monument to the great ‘Destructo’ was placed at the track.
On windy September afternoons as the red dust swirls over the track the heartbeat of great lizards can be faintly heard.
