Whiskey Gully Wines
Whiskey Gully Wines, at Severnlea, is in the heart of the Granite Belt region which has ideal climate and soils for premium wine grape production. It produces elegant and fruity full-bodied red wines and well balanced white wines in both aromatic and fruit driven styles. Their wines have won over 50 trophies and awards at National and State wine shows in their first three years of competition. Their trophies have included Best Queensland Wine for their Chardonnay, Best Queensland Cabernet and Best Red Wine of Show for their Shiraz.
In 2005 Whiskey Gully Wines won a gold medal and trophies for the Best White Wine and Best Queensland Wine at the Winestate Magazine Awards. Currently, their wine list has four gold medal wines, and three that have won trophies. Many of their other wines have also won medals.
Whiskey Gully Wines' vineyard was established on one of the district's oldest station properties - Beverley - which was first settled in 1880 and the historic homestead has a cellar door outlet, a restaurant and there are also award - winning accommodation cottages. The first grapevines were planted in 1997 and their first vintage declared in 1999. All of their products are estate grown and hand-crafted by award-winning winemakers Rod Macpherson and Phillippa Hambleton.
They have a modern vineyard producing fine wines from a variety of grapes including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and French Colombard. They use the latest viticultural techniques, including weed-matting and drip irrigation. The Granite Belt, although a relative new-comer to the premium wine market, is regarded as one of the most prospective wine areas in Australia. The granite soil drains well and the climate is excellent for grapes, especially above the 800 metre mark, as there is a prolonged summer with lots of sun and daytime temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius.
