Tyrconnell Outback Experience and Historic Gold Mines
Tyrconnell cottages are three unique accommodation units set in rugged hilly bushland 150 kilometres west of Cairns and 34 kilometres north of Dimbulah on an unsealed road. The cottages are situated on the Hodgkinson goldfield, the reason for the establishment of Cairns and Port Douglas in the 1870s. Virtually deserted, the goldfield was once home to 10,000 people, a heritage listed goldmine, one of the last testaments to this era.
The cottages are timber and iron in construction, one is the old Manager's house and also two heritage style cottages built in 2000's.
Tyrconnell offers a very personalised experience. Guests can eat meals with the property owners, Cate and Andy, who offer guided tours and gold panning. There are bush walks, seasonal swimming, star gazing and a general feeling of tranquility in this bush setting, no power lines (completely solar powered), traffic and crowds. It's rustic, unique and authentically Australian.
