Garden Island Ships' Graveyard Maritime Heritage Trail
The abandoned wrecks of the Garden Island Ships' Graveyard near Port Adelaide represent a collection of crafts that plied South Australian waters in an era when the maritime industry dominated transport, trade and employment.
From 1909-1945 the North Arm of the Port Adelaide River became the final destination for many vessels, which had outlived their usefulness.
The trail offers canoeists and small boat enthusiasts a chance to cruise the shallow waters of Garden Island and discover the final resting place of 25 wrecks - a varied group of dredges, barges, pontoons and ferries as well as sailing ships and steamers.
The Garden Island Ships' Graveyard Maritime Trail includes six interpretive signs (two at the Garden Island, and three on piles adjacent to the main group of five wrecks). A 50-page booklet is available from the Department and Heritage Information Line on (08) 8204 1910 for a small fee.
