Old Government House
To escape the summer heat, South Australia’s early Governors MacDonnell would retreat to a summer residence in the cooler Adelaide Hills, known today as Old Government House.
Built in the middle of the 19th century, Old Government House lies in the heart of Belair National Park 11 kilometres south of Adelaide. Featuring an elegant terrace, separate servants’ quarters, South Australia’s first indoor plunge pool and tasteful period-style furnishings, it stands as an excellent example of Victorian-style architecture and decor.
Take a leisurely stroll around the delightful one-acre gardens featuring a collection of heritage roses, mature trees and cottage plants and flowers cultivated in Victorian times.
Tours are conducted on Sunday and public holidays between 1pm to 4pm, when the ‘Friends of Old Government House’ showcase the different styles of furnishings in each room and share fascinating stories about this grand residence. Group tours are also available by appointment.
