Old Gum Tree

As South Australia's first mainland settlement, Glenelg holds a special place in South Australia's history. The Old Gum Tree in Glenelg was chosen by Governor Hindmarsh as a backdrop against which he read the proclamation that formally established the new province of South Australia on 28 December 1836. Every year South Australia celebrates Proclamation Day with a re-enactment of this reading at the Old Gum Tree.

Catch the Adelaide city to Bay Tram to Mosley Square, Glenelg and walk the self-guided Proclamation Trail and Discovery Trail. The Trail starts from the Bay Discovery Centre, Glenelg Town Hall, Moseley Square, Glenelg. The centre is open daily 10am to 5pm. The Discovery Trail will challenge kids and parents! Find the answers to the brainteasers by exploring the multimedia exhibition - learn about the Voyage of the Africaine, Colonel Light, the Old Gum Tree and the Big Dipper, watch films of days gone by at the beach!
