St George Church and Cemetery Tours
You are invited to experience a wonderful trip through South Australian history. Come on a tour of our historic Church and cemetery. St George’s Church was built on land given by Captain John Finlay Duff; it is unique in architecture, constructed on Kentish Masonry lines in 1848. You will be delighted by stories of how it began, touch the walls erected 160 years ago by the first settlers in the colony. Hear how they carted water worn pebbles from the nearby creeks and how they used Blue Gum and slate, material from the local area.
St George’s was the first Church of England to be consecrated in the colony by Augustus Short first Bishop of Adelaide and sadly, his baby daughter was the first burial in the churchyard two weeks after the consecration.
Walking through the cemetery your tour guide will unfold the lives of pioneers of South Australia and devout members of the parish such as Dr Christopher Rawson and Mary Penfold, founder of Penfold Winery, Frederick George Waterhouse, explorer and first curator of the South Australian Museum, Sir George Murray, Chief Justice, Chancellor of the Adelaide University and Lieutenant Governor of South Australia, to mention just a few. Hear explained symbols on headstones and much more. This tour is a must see if you love history. A real gem.
