Adelaide Gaol Historic Site and Museum
Take a walk around the old Adelaide Gaol historic site on a guided or a self-guided tour and see aspects of prison life in South Australia over a period of 141 years. Take a ghost tour - or sleep in the gaol overnight! Come and do time with us.
Adelaide Gaol officially opened in 1841 and closed in February 1988. Several sections of the original cellblocks are still standing for you to explore, as well as many later additions including the 'New Building' built in 1879. A tour takes you through cellblocks, exercise yards, the hanging tower and graves area. Between 1840 and 1964 one woman and 44 men were hanged at Adelaide Gaol. Portable gallows were used for 20 of these people; a further 21 were hanged in the New Building and four in the hanging tower. All of these people are buried at the gaol.
Explore the museum displays including two new exhibitions in the old gaol dining room and the women’s kitchen. Have your mug shot and fingerprints taken as a reminder of your time in gaol. There’s also a gift shop with souvenirs.
Barbecue and refreshment facilities are available by arrangements for groups.
Guided tours last for one-and-a-half hours to two hours and can be arranged for groups, or you can join one of the regular Sunday tours at 11am, noon and 1pm. Those wishing to take a self-guided tour during the week are sent off with a map and an audiotape. Allow yourself a minimum of one hour.
Night tours and ghost tours can be arranged for groups of 15 or more. Be among those who have seen and heard strange things in the gaol and see if you can help us solve the mysteries! Ghost tours are not suitable for under 15 year olds.
Groups of 15 or more can also enjoy the experience of a sleepover at the gaol, in the dormitory or the old cellblocks. Bed and breakfast in queen, double or single rooms are available. Bookings essential.
Adelaide Gaol also has several meeting rooms for hire. Please call for details.
