Fort Glanville

Fort Glanville, commissioned in 1880, was taken over by the Commonwealth in 1901, by which time it was of no strategic importance and its flanking guns were given to the City of Adelaide in 1907. At times with a caretaker, at others virtually abandoned, all metalwork and ten inch carriages were removed as scrap in 1937. One now restored, is the largest gun in Australia.

Restored to state control in 1951, it was converted into a caravan park. In the 1960's its heritage value was recognised and following removal of the caravan park, restoration began.

Declared a National Heritage Site in 1978, it was opened as a tourist attraction in 1980. It is the most complete nineteenth century fort in Australia, one of very few worldwide in original condition and now with its original guns. Five cannons are fireable some being world unique. On open days volunteers of the Historical Association re-enact 1880’s military life, with cannon and rifle firings and parade ground drill.

Guided tours of the site and its buildings are given. A visitor’s centre houses a museum, souvenir shop and refreshment area. The fort is open for group visits (minimum 25 persons) any day by prior arrangement.
