Reynella Horse Changing Station

The restoration of the building was completed over a three year period by a group of hardworking volunteers working one day a week. An interesting collection of historical artefacts, heritage information and photographs are now on display in the restored building. Mementos can also be purchased.

Built in the 1850s, it is believed that the stable building was used as a meeting place for the Methodist Church before their church was built in Peach Street. After this it became a Blacksmith. Travellers going to and from Adelaide would stop to rest and change horses and so it eventually developed into a Changing Station for the Cobb and Co coaches that operated between Adelaide and Willunga. The Changing Station was placed close to the inn (Crown Hotel) for the convenience of passengers. It is believed to be the only known Changing Station in South Australia, which was not attached to a hotel.

The cottage was built later and then a front ticket office was added for the coach service. It ceased operating as a Changing Station in February 1915 with the introduction of train services from Willunga to Adelaide. The property was purchased in 1916 by Walter Reynell to be used as housing for winery employees
