Willunga Courthouse and Slate Museums

Start your exploration of historic Willunga at the top of High Street where you will find the Slate Museum, the Courthouse Museum and the start of the Willunga Slate Trail.

The Slate Museum is believed to be the only museum in Australia devoted to the slate industry. Find out how slate was discovered in 1840, how it was quarried and how traditional skills and tools were used by the Cornish quarrymen who migrated to South Australia’s first quarry town. Fascinating examples of the many uses of slate can be seen. You can learn why Willunga’s roofing slates earned it the title of “the slate capital of Australia”.

Pick up a copy of the Willunga Slate Trail brochure which invites you to explore Willunga’s back streets and churchyards, appreciate the ingenious use of slate and see quarrymen’s quaint cottages and the grander homes of the quarry owners.

The heritage listed Courthouse Museum introduces you to an authentic nineteenth century courtroom with jury and prisoner boxes, cells and exercise yard – ideal for informal courtroom re-enactments. Displays of memorabilia tell the story of the old police station, police officers, offenders, magistrates and court cases. Visitors can browse through family and district archives or enjoy the picturesque setting, picnic areas and self guided walking trail through the nature reserve across the creek.

The delightful setting beside the permanent creek running through the Courthouse reserve is a popular venue for weddings, reunions and other functions details on application. Guided museum tours, Willunga township tours and group tours can be arranged.
