Bethany Wines
In a world that seems obsessed with speed and immediacy, we are often in danger of losing sight of life's simpler traditions. Filling buckets with clusters of new season's grapes in the Barossa, under the blaze of the Australia sun, or pulling on a Drizabone on a frosty winter morning to prune gnarled old bush vines.
Working with one's hands by tilling the soil, tending the vines, crushing the grapes and making the wine, keeps us in touch with the timeless cycle of the seasons. At Bethany Wines, our family has been marking the passage of the seasons in this way for nearly 150 years, with every generation continuing the process of nurturing, preserving and passing on a respect for our land, while maintaining a humble gratitude for the bounty of the Barossa.
When you visit our winery, stand back and look over our family vineyards, breathe in the scented air, drink in the colour of the vine leaves and allow you to relax and sense the cycle of the seasons of life that we live by.
The first vineyard was planted in 1852 from cuttings carefully nursed from Europe to Australia. A wine cellar was also built but, despite Johann's reputation as an early colonial winemaker, the family concentrated on viticulture for the next four generations.
Built high in an old stone quarry high up in the Barossa Ranges, it commands the best views of the valley.
