Bundaleer Forest Reserve

Bundaleer Forest was Australia’s first plantation forest. Experience its textures, sounds and aromas and enjoy the cool tranquillity of a deciduous forest. It’s just 10 kilometres south of Jamestown on the Spalding Road, and offers delightful scenery and walks.

Walking trails that take in the Bundaleer Forest include the Heysen and Mawson Trails, Conservator’s Walk starting at the Arboretum on the Georgetown Road, and the Scenic Walk or Maple Walk, both starting from the Bundaleer picnic ground. See old dry stone walls, a fine panorama of the forest and valley – and look for kangaroos!

The Arboretum on Georgetown Road contains a range of native and exotic tree species. The Conservator's Hut - formerly the exclusive residence of the Conservator of Forests - is on the Conservator's Trail. Picnics can be enjoyed in the picnic ground adjacent to the Bundaleer Progress Association oval and tennis courts. The picnic ground remains open all year round, except for days of extreme fire danger.

Stay in the Curnow's Hut, originally built for William Curnow, Bundaleer's first nurseryman and now renovated.

The 3,100 hectare forest derives its name from an Aboriginal word for stony place. It was originally part of the Bundaleer Station, a large pastoral property established in 1841.
